ABOUT ME
I'm a GP with expertise in hypnotherapy currently awaiting award for Diploma in Clinical Hypnosis with the South Australian Society of Hypnosis (SASH). Initially a sceptic, I am now convinced hypnotherapy is a powerful and useful tool for assisting people lead the life the want to live. I wish to further the research in hypnotherapy so that it can be used more widely and more effectively for people seeking change.

SPECIALTIES
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
I apply techniques from more established psychological therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT). I have found working with both the conscious and unconscious mind produces the best results . Whilst I am interested in broadening my scope of practice to encompass managing trauma, psychological disorders such as anxiety and depression - as I work in solo practice for hypnotherapy- I encourage patients to continue to see their regular General Practitioner and/or Psychologist for ongoing care as my current part-time role does not enable me to offer crisis-care.
PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
My greatest life-changing experience was being confronted with the loss of my father Dr Tam-Van Doan who was also a GP whilst I was studying in Medical School. At the time, I experienced a sense of loss for the relationship that might have been, the sense of safety and love that was given to me throughout my life, and struggled with wanting to spend more time with my father whilst I was encouraged to continue my studies.

I am no stranger to the feelings of loss, disappointment, shame from criticism form self and others, anxiety at the ability to perform and self-doubt. I have in the past (and somewhat even now!) over-eat at times of stress and struggle with my weight.
I acknowledge that the research on weight loss strategies for overweight people can be contradictory but on points where experts agree I aim to encourage my patients to follow researched-proven methods of improving success in losing weight: including incorporating expertise from a multi-disciplinary team involving dieticians, exercise physiologists and obesity specialists; improving self-monitoring of weight and dietary intake, and assisting in problem-solving and management of stress associated with the process of losing weight as well as in life!

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM ME
Hypnotherapy allows us to approach problems in a creative, imaginative but also common-sense perspectives. I will do my best to incorporate strategies that I feel have been well researched but also strategies that I have found useful in my own experience or that may be best suited to you. With your permission I may call upon the expertise of mentors who have worked for many years in Clinical Hypnotherapy in association with the South Australian Society of Hypnosis (SASH) for guidance and ideas.
I aim to always provide emotional support and an open-ear for listening and value a non-judgemental approach to developing a safe therapeutic environment. If I feel that our therapy is not helping your situation I will aim to recommend a different therapist that is more suited for your needs or who can provide a different approach. I will not revert to so called "talk-therapy" which although can be useful for expressing and acknowledging emotions is not effective on its own as a true therapy although I am aware it is often the "default" mode of therapy amongst inexperienced and untrained therapists.
